The AI Impact Timeline: What to Expect
The automation of postal mail sorting is well underway. Entry-level manual sorter positions were largely eliminated between 2015 and 2025. While machine operators and maintenance technicians will persist, their numbers are in sharp decline and expected to continue through 2033. The core of manual sorting is already becoming obsolete, with automated systems handling the bulk of mail processing.
By 2029, AI and high-speed sorting machines will automate approximately 85% of postal mail sorting tasks. This means the traditional manual mail sorter role will be nearly extinct. Automated systems are now capable of processing over 40,000 pieces of mail per hour, far surpassing human capabilities in speed and efficiency.
The transformation is marked by a significant workforce reduction. The USPS mail sorter workforce has already collapsed by over 70% since 2000, driven by both automation and the rise of digital communication. Projections estimate employment falling from around 110,000 in 2023 to approximately 50,000 by 2033.
